Alessia Cara is using her platform to spread an empowering message about beauty, strength, and acceptance. In her new music video for “Scars To Your Beautiful,” off her album Know-It-All, she includes cancer survivors, transgender men and women, and more to show that beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all.

“The world sometimes tells us that we shouldn’t be happy with ourselves if we don’t fit certain standards of beauty,” Cara said in a press release. “‘Scars To Your Beautiful’ is my reminder that beauty isn’t only one look, shape, size, or color. Beauty comes in all forms – tangible and intangible – inside and out. We need to recognize that.”

In between shots of Cara singing in a warehouse high above the city are shots and videos of numerous people speaking about how others have responded to their differences. “You don’t have to change a thing/ The world can change its heart,” she sings on the moving song.

Cara knows her song is one in a tradition of female singers like Christina Aguilera, TLC, and even Colbie Caillat attempting to build up listeners. “A couple of female artists have done it in the past, and I wanted to put my own spin on it because I feel like you can never have too many reminders and too many songs talking about those things,” Cara told Cosmopolitan. “It was important to put that in my own words and remind people that they are beautiful no matter what.”

Beginning on September 29th, Cara will head out for a headlining tour that takes her through 21 cities across the U.S. and Canada.
