Remember the old Tootsie Pop commercials: “How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a Tootsie Pop?” Well, someone finally figured it out.

First, here’s the old commercial:

And Tootsie Roll’s official answer is “It depends on a variety of factors such as the size of your mouth, the amount of saliva, etc. Basically, the world may never know.”

But there’s a guy on Twitter, Mark Holland (@RiffRaff41) who actually licked one side of a Tootsie Roll Pop over and over, and kept track of how many licks it took him to get to the center.

And the answer is 850. Now you know.

However, there have been other studies over the years that came up with much lower figures. According to “Tootsie Roll Industries,” Purdue University created a tongue-simulation machine that came up with an average of 364 licks. And they say¬†junior high students at Swathmore School¬†reported an average of 144 licks.
